Painting a metal door can be a simple task with just a few steps and tips. Metal doors are often used for exterior use because they are resistant to a variety of weather conditions and do not attract insects .

Although it has strong durability and can deter intruders , its appearance can gradually deteriorate over time and temperature changes.

Things to consider before painting an exterior metal door

First, you need to decide if you are going to take the door apart and paint it. Taking the door apart will reduce the amount of paint dripping onto the floor when you paint from top to bottom.

If you paint the door horizontally, the paint won’t drip onto the floor. If you have a door that doesn’t come apart, you’ll always need to be careful when working on it.

If you want to take the door apart, simply remove the hinge pin . With the door open as far as it will go, place a nail over the hinge pin and use a hammer to drive the nail up from the bottom. This will remove the hinge pin.

After all the screws are removed, break down the door and put it on a clean, flat surface to start working on. Of course, before painting, all the metal parts should be removed and areas that ought not be painted, including glass, masked with masking tape and paper.

It is important to know in advance that you will most likely not be able to complete the entire task in one day , so you should first analyze the situation before taking the door apart.

Step-by-step instructions for painting an exterior metal door

Since you have now completed all of these preparatory stages, it’s now time to truly begin. However, the products listed above cause acute health issues in children, so they must not be within the reach of any children.

Step 1

If you have already painted, it is a good idea to clean the paint off with paint remover . By removing any remaining paint, you will be able to get a cleaner finish when you apply new paint.

First, clean the surface thoroughly to remove dust and foreign substances, then use the removal solution as directed in the product manual.

Step 2

If the paint is gradually worn off, scrub the door with sandpaper and a wire brush. If you see any rust, it is a good idea to use a rust remover.

Step 3

Wipe the entire door with turpentine or acetone to remove any remaining dust .

Step 4

Now it’s time to even out the door surface with a primer or base and protect the metal. Primers come in a variety of colors , so choose the one that most closely resembles your paint. This way, you can keep your door looking neat without using too much paint.

Step 5

Once the primer is completely dry, let’s get started with the first coat of paint .

Before painting , read carefully the label. A little turpentine can be mixed in, but that depends on the brand.

After pouring an appropriate amount of paint into the paint tray, lightly apply it with a roller. For corners and crevices, you can thoroughly paint them with a brush.

Then it is important to let the paint dry sufficiently. If you rush it , you may not be satisfied with the result . Drying time varies depending on the product, but usually you should wait about 3 hours .

The number of coats you need to apply can be determined by observing how the paint dries .

Step 6

Once the paint is completely dry, you should flip the door over and start working on the other side. If you flip the door over while the paint is still wet, you may end up peeling the paint, so it’s best to work on one side at a time .

If your door is damaged and has dents, it is best to seek professional help. It is not recommended to paint the damaged area without first repairing it .

Exterior metal doors can be painted directly

Before leaving the shop, note the materials you need so that you won’t miss them. Furthermore, as you obtain materials, choose the right material product. For example, buy primer for metal but not for wood.

Before you begin, always read the instructions on the label of the product  . Should you have any questions, you may reach the manufacturer.
